THE
STRUCTURES LAB
JOESEPH VOCATURO
Joseph Vocaturo oversaw the building of the models. He has served as
the lab manager for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
since 1999. In addition to managing the labs, he advises and assists
undergraduates, graduates, and researchers in both educational and research
efforts. He has received the Princeton University Merit Award for laboratory
teaching and commitment to students. Before coming to Princeton, Joe
was a Senior Staff Technician/Associate Test Specialist at Lockheed
Martin, where he worked on space flight systems and launch operations.
Joe supervised the students and managed the model building project both
technically and administratively. For the Bayonne, George Washington,
Felsenau, and Sunniberg Bridges, he was instrumental in the selection
and procurement of materials, the techniques employed for the fabrication
of parts, and the integration design (how to join and fasten parts).
The fabrication and assembly of parts for some models required the use
of specialized tooling. He designed this tooling for all the bridge
models excluding the George Washington Bridge, for which Ted Griffith
was the principal tool designer. He was also primarily responsible for
determining or approving the degree of detail expressed in the models.
